Tyler began his career as a research economist for the LA County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). For three years he served as LA chapter president of the National Association for Business Economics. In 2019, he co-founded the first Renters’ Committee of his local neighborhood council and was part of the group that founded the Westside chapter of Abundant Housing LA. In 2021, Tyler was elected to the board of his neighborhood council, serving first as a co-chair of the planning and land use committee and later serving as council chair.

In 2022, Tyler was asked to become chapter lead for the LA New Liberals, the greater LA chapter of the Center for New Liberalism. In 2024, he was elected to serve a one-year term on the CNL Steering Committee. In 2025, he was re-elected to the CNL Steering Committee for a two-year term and was also elected by his colleagues to serve as committee chair. In late 2024, he helped co-found an LA chapter of YIMBY Action, YIMBY Los Angeles.
